Hydrating Your Dry Skin

23/11/2020

Comments

Dry skin can be a very frustrating skin condition to deal with. Your skin can feel flaky, tight, and sore from the lack of moisture, and can impact your confidence. It also makes it difficult to find suitably hydrating face care and makeup products, since they may not be hydrating enough or even make your skin uncomfortably oily.

Thankfully, there are specialised products, facial treatments and natural remedies to help relieve your discomfort and let you enjoy plump, refreshed skin.

Keeping Your Skin Hydrated is Important to Prevent Irritation and Skin Tightness

Add These Foods to your Diet

Your diet can have quite an effect on your skin, which means that adding these foods can help hydrate your skin and relieve your discomfort as well as boost your health.

Sweet Potatoes
Sweet potatoes are an often recommended remedy for dry skin, especially when eaten with their skin. They’re full of Vitamin A which repairs your skin and beta-carotene which protects your skin and keeps it hydrated.

Coconut Oil
Coconut Oil is a great alternative to vegetable oils for cooking since it’s much healthier. In addition, it can improve your skin both by ingesting it or by rubbing it on problematic areas.

Water
Water is the key to great skin and good health. It’s important to stay hydrated, so keep a bottle nearby at all times to get into the habit of drinking more water. Not only is water hydrating, but it can remove toxins from your skin.

Avocadoes
A versatile ingredient that can be eaten in many different recipes, avocados keep skin hydrated and help prevent the signs of aging. They’re incredibly nourishing, so you should definitely include them in your diet.

Oatmeal
Oatmeal is a healthy food to wake up to. It’s great at tackling flaky dry skin and redness. It’s also a great breakfast food that can be combined with many other ingredients to keep you feeling fuller for longer, so you’re less likely to snack on unhealthy foods that dry your skin.

Small Lifestyle Changes

You don’t need to completely change your daily routine to tackle dry skin. A few small changes can have a great effect. Incorporating a moisturiser into your shower routine is always recommended, as well as avoiding washing your body or face with water that is too hot. But did you know that moisturiser can be more effective if you apply it to damp skin? So make sure you use it right after you’ve showered or washed your face so that it locks in the hydration and refreshes you longer.

Setting a humidifier on your desk while you work is also a simple solution that won’t mess up your routine. Desktop humidifiers only need to be filled up with water at the start of the workday and you can let them work their magic. They can also improve your breathing if you have allergies or asthma, and counteract the dehydrating effects of being in a room with an Air Conditioner or heater on all day. Plus, they usually come in attractive shapes and colours!

Facial Treatments

Nothing beats a facial for a powerful boost to hydration, especially facials designed to combat dry skin. A Hydra Blue facial is great at making dry skin radiant again, while a Douceur Marine facial treats redness and soreness to soothe your face. The movements of a facial treatment also have the benefit of boosting circulation and collagen production, so your skin is not only fresher but looks younger too.

Facial Products

Incorporating a moisturiser into your routine is often the first and best-recommended step to tackling dry skin. However, many products contain ingredients that make other skin problems worse, make your skin too oily, or simply don’t hydrate your skin enough. Picking safe, reliable products is important, which is why Carisma recommends products by Phytomer, since they are effective, natural, and sustainably sourced.

If you have combination skin it has probably been an ongoing struggle to find a product that hydrates your dry areas without making your oily areas worse, so you may wish to try an ultra moisturiser that’s oil-free, or an easy-to-apply gel solution that’s great for any skin type. If you feel regular discomfort from skin tightness, a comforting rescue cream may be the ideal solution. If you prefer a more complex routine, then adding a hydrating night cream along with your normal moisturiser can help you get bright skin before you’ve even woken up for the day.

Dry skin doesn’t have to mean constant discomfort or insecurity. You can tackle it head-on in a simple, straightforward way with a few small changes to your lifestyle and diet that will have a positive effect on your wellness as well.

Overcoming the Loss of Your Job Amidst the Pandemic

18/11/2020

Comments

Losing your job is a distressing experience that can be hard to get over. If you have lost your job due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it’s important to realize that you are by no means alone. Millions are in your shoes and will be searching the job market in an attempt to relaunch their careers. This competition is bound to be fierce, yet it may surprise you to know that the best course of action, right now, is to not jump right back into the workforce.

Using the time you now have on your hands to focus on yourself and determine the career you now want to pursue is the best option for someone in your shoes. Immediately after losing your job, it can be difficult to determine what you should do, but rest assured that there are preemptive steps you can take to launch a better career in the future.
The Pandemic Can also be an Opportunity to Invest Time in Self-Improvement and Career Advancement
The Pandemic Can Also Be an Opportunity to Invest Time in Self-Improvement and Career Advancement

Revamp Your Skills

One of the first things you should do after losing your job, regardless of whether or not it was due to the pandemic, is revamping your skillset. Unless you already worked in a tech-intensive field, your skills are likely out of date for the future of work. Technology is a driving force of change that is automating industries all around the world. In the near future, there will be no worker more valuable than those that hold the knowledge of maintaining technology.

To that end, revamping your skillset to be more tech-based is one of the smartest courses of action after losing your job amidst the pandemic. There are a number of easy online degrees that you could pursue in your free time which will give you a new skillset based on technology. Besides the fact that these courses may better prepare you for a new career, they will give you important soft skills for the future of work.

As discussed by Skillcrush, tech skills can make you a better problem solver and a better leader overall. Couple this with a knowledge of technology and it’s clear to see why you may be favored over the competition that immediately chose to try and dive back into a changing workforce.

Attend a Bootcamp

Staying on the topic of revamping your skillset, attending a highly rated bootcamp is a great course of action. As far as being proactive goes, coding bootcamps are the best option to consider when setting up a new and long-lasting career. Coding has been around for years, but the skill has led to entire fields being created around it.

It goes without saying that this is an important skill for anyone to learn. In fact, they are teaching this skill lightly to kids as young as elementary school. In order to compete with these future employees, learning some knowledge of the various coding languages now can set you apart from other workers.

There is nothing wrong with gaining additional education and taking the time to do so now may help you later down the line.

Get a Cover Letter Ready

Regardless of how long you held the job you just lost, getting an up-to-date resume and cover letter ready to go should be a priority for you. As far as your resume goes, add all your relevant skills and work experience. Brush up on how to properly craft a cover letter and focus on describing yourself in an appealing way. Obtaining more education in a tech field via an online degree program may come in handy at this point as you can describe yourself as a capable learner able to adapt to technology.

Besides just revamping your cover letter and resume, consider taking a career quiz to see which job may be the best choice for your unique skill set. Try to match your skills and interests to a field that has a high level of growth in the next ten years and consider picking up a job in that career path.

Conclusion

The recent pandemic has made it clear that no industry is safe from disruption. Additionally, more likely than not, technology will lead to another disruption in the near future. In order to overcome these detrimental disruptions, prepare now by getting yourself ready for the future of work. Use this job loss as an opportunity to grow your career in a different direction that can improve the longevity of that career. Get ahead of all these disruptions, rather than struggle to overcome them, and you may find yourself in a better position than ever before.

How to Beat Insomnia & Get Better Sleep

16/11/2020

Comments

Getting good sleep is an integral part of maintaining both physical and mental wellness. We may take a good night’s rest for granted, but even a single interrupted or fitful night can make us realise how important restful sleep really is.

Losing sleep for any reason, including insomnia, can impact every aspect of our lives. Tiredness can mean making more mistakes at work, being short tempered with loved ones or simply having a harder time being motivated and enjoying life. At the end of the day, no one enjoys tossing and turning in bed watching the clock tick by, so here are some useful tips to help you get a good night’s sleep. They will range from easy, small changes to your environment to antistress spa day treatments, so you are sure to find something that fits into your lifestyle.
A Lack of Sleep Can Affect Your Work
A Lack of Sleep Can Have an Effect on Your Work

Create a Welcoming Sleeping Space

Sleeping in a room that’s quiet, dark and cool will naturally help you get to sleep easier. If your room is facing a street light or you perhaps prefer to sleep during the day, blackout curtains can help simulate a dark environment.

Removing distractions like computers, T.V’s & work items can also help you get into the right mindset. Having these items around can weaken the natural association you have with your bedroom as a place of rest. Some people also find the light aroma of essential oils like lavender can help them get to sleep, but make sure not to apply undiluted essential oils directly to the skin, as they can cause irritation.

Reduce Light Exposure

Your body naturally associates daylight with being awake, so exposing yourself to too much artificial light, especially before bed, confuses your natural rhythms. Bright light, especially blue light typical of phones and computers should be avoided. If this is not possible, look into setting a blue light filter on your device to reduce its disrupting effect. Being in a dark environment will encourage the production of the hormone melatonin, which promotes sleep.
Avoid Screens Before Bed

Maintain a Sleeping Routine

You can help your body and mind transition from day to night by relaxing for an hour before bed. You can take a bath, enjoy a hobby or perform exercises like yoga, but make sure to avoid too much time using technology, as explained above.

It is also important to sleep and wake at around the same time if possible. If you need to change the time you are going to sleep, try and adjust your routine gradually instead of all at once, so that your body’s rhythms have time to adapt.

Avoid Caffeine, Nicotine & Alcohol

It may seem obvious to avoid drinking coffee before bed, but what about nicotine and alcohol? Many people enjoy a glass of wine or a smoke before bed, but surprisingly these may be contributing to insomnia like caffeine would.

Studies have shown that consuming these substances may also increase anxiety, which will make it harder to get to sleep and feel well rested when you wake up. A 2015 study showed that caffeine can even make your mood worse if you are already sleep deprived. Instead, consider drinking cherry juice, herbal teas or warm milk to help you drift off.

Try Antistress and Relaxation Treatments

If you are going through a stressful time, especially an unpredictable year like 2020, it may be hard to get a good night’s rest. Trying a soothing massage can help ease some tension and refresh your outlook. Carisma Spa’s dedicated antistress massage is designed to ease tension, while massages like the Hot Stone Massage or the Ayurvedic Massage can help with exhaustion and anxiety.

Conclusion and Closing Thoughts

In conclusion, your body naturally knows when it is time to rest, but the anxiety and complications of daily life can confuse it. By establishing a sleeping routine that simulates a cool, dark night and relaxes your body, you can help promote regular restful sleep.

Ayurvedic massage: What to Expect, Diet Plan and 10 Proven Health Benefits

9/11/2020

Ayurvedic massage, also known as "oil massage or Abhyanga", is a treatment that incorporates herbal essential oils with non-traditional strokes and kneading that suits individual needs. It is one of the world's oldest healing systems with its origin dated back more than 3000 years ago in India.

Ayurvedic massage is based on ancient Indian principles of Ayurveda (the science of life) and pressure points. The treatment focuses on manipulating energy fields and freeing emotional burdens rather than relieving tension in the muscle. The heavy use of herbal essential oil and its focus on specific pressure points in the body is what differentiates the ayurvedic massage from the Lomi Lomi or other types of massage.

According to the Ayurvedic Classics, Ayurvedic massage is a daily regimen needed for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The Ayurvedic Massage technique stimulates the lymphatic system. Practitioners claim that benefits include pain relief, reduction of fatigue and improved immune system.

It is a perfect massage for bringing out your glow. It makes you relaxed, comfortable and at peace.  If you ever need a  massage to reduce pain, mental stress and fatigue, then it's time you tried out the Ayurvedic massage. Here is some information that could come in handy.

What To Expect At Your First Ayurvedic Massage

The Ayurvedic massage, like other types of massage, starts with a consultation. This helps your massage therapist identify your body needs and expectations to ensure the best treatment is recommended. Your therapist might also inquire about your current lifestyle, especially your eating habits and daily physical activity. Patients are usually advised to provide honest answers to ensure your therapist gives the most favourable recommendations. Recommendations given are based on your  habit, temperament, climate and the season of the year as well as  your physical constitution.

After your consultation, you will be taken to the spa for your massage treatment. The treatment can last up to 60 minutes depending on the type of treatment recommended.  During the massage, you will be in your underwear with your body covered with towels, only the body parts being massaged will be exposed to the oil massage.

Soothing music or chants is played in the background while You will lie on the bed. The massage therapist then pours warm oil on your body and starts massaging it in a series of movement. The ayurvedic massage technique constitutes movement that varies from superficial to deep strokes and is aimed at relaxing your nervous system and nourishing your body. The oil used for the ayurvedic massage is allocated according to your body type to prevent allergic reactions and skin issues.

Oils to use for Ayurvedic Massage

The best oil to use for Abhyanga depends on your body type (dosha). In Ayurveda, three doshas determine which Ayurvedic massage oil you need to encourage balance and health.
  • Here’s a general look at the doshas, along with their skin qualities and recommended oils:
  • Vata (dry skin): Heavy oils like almond, sesame, or avocado oil is recommended
  • Pitta (sensitive or overheated skin): Neutral oil like ghee or sunflower oil is recommended
  • Kapha (oily skin):  Less oil is needed for the oily skin type. Light oils like safflower, sweet almond, or flaxseed oil are recommended

The oil can be used by itself or blended with another oil.

Ayurvedic Diet Plan

The Ayurvedic diet plan is an important component of the Ayurvedic massage treatment as it contributes to long term health results. This diet plan consists of six primary tastes that help in stimulating your digestive system as well as maintaining water-electrolyte balance in your body.

A typical Ayurvedic diet includes:
  • Raw Honey
  •  Seasonal Fruits
  •  Soaked Legumes
  •  Fermented foods
  •  Root veggies
  •  Seasonal vegetables
  •  Spices
  •  Meat
  •  Sprouted grains

Some diet you may want to avoid include:

Types of Ayurvedic Massage

There are various types of ayurvedic massage recommended by the massage therapist during the consultation. Some are more suited for a set of people than the other. Ayurveda understands the uniqueness of different body types. This is why it is usually recommended based on body types.

There are  4 major types of Ayurvedic massage. They include:
  1. Srotabhyanga Massage: This is similar to traditional lymphatic drainage and is a perfect treatment for removing toxins in the arterial and lymphatic systems. It tends to focus on the legs and is recommended in cases of circulatory problems, water retention, tiredness and excess of toxins in the body.
  2. Marma Massage: The marma massage is known to have a calming effect on the body, mind and soul. It is a comprehensive massage that activates blood circulation and strengthens the function of the brain.
  3. Champi Massage: This is a scalp massage that majorly serves to relieve stress and release tension (head, neck and backaches). Its effects are felt both during and after application.
  4. Padabhyanga Massage: This is a popular traditional foot massage in India. It has high relaxing power and is known to improve headaches, reduce nervousness and eliminate insomnia.

  1. Improve skin health: According to Ayurvedic massage therapist, healthy skin is the main benefit of this massage as the oil used nourishes the skin and its overall appearance. A 2018 study determined that facial massage increases skin blood flow. Another study found out that massaging scars reduces their appearance and thickness.

Side Effects of Abhyanga

Though oil massage has a lot of health benefits,  It is strongly advised not to have an ayurvedic massage in the following situations:
  • During the menstrual cycle as the deep pressure during the massage can initiate a release of toxins from deep tissues at a time when the body is already a bit taxed.
  • During pregnancy to protect the growing embryo and fetus against any unnecessary exposure to toxins.
  • On infected or broken skin
  • With  indigestion
  • After taking purgatives
  • When you have a medical condition

Conclusion and Closing Thoughts

There is no greater expression of self-love than being anointed and massaged from head to toe with warm oil. It nourishes your body and improves your well being. As Ayurvedic massage is tailored towards your wellness need, you have to ensure it is done by a qualified Ayurvedic massage practitioner to ensure your safety and well being is guaranteed. Book an Ayurvedic Massage Session Here.

Skincare Ingredients: What to Look Out For and What to Avoid

A Guest Article specially written for carismaspa.com by Olive Goliger

Picture
There's an oft-cited statistic that often gets thrown around. Maybe you have heard of it, maybe you haven't, but there's little truth to the statement that says 60% of what you put on your skin gets absorbed into the bloodstream.

Yet even if this is the case, it doesn't necessarily mean that you can be careless about what you put on your skin. Even if products mostly just reach the surface, they still have a significant effect on your skin health. This is why you should be careful about the ingredients that the beauty products in your skincare regimen contain.

To help you out, here are some ingredients that you should incorporate into your skincare routine and ones that you should completely avoid:

Ingredients to look out for

Ceramides
If you happen to have an issue with your skin's moisture levels, you'll benefit from using products with ceramides.  A Self article notes that ceramides are one type of lipid found in the stratum corneum, and are particularly excellent at sealing in hydration. They help your skin look plumper and they can even manage some signs of aging.

It's also worth noting that there are prescription creams containing ceramides that are specifically formulated to treat eczema, but ceramides are also found in over-the-counter moisturizers and night creams.
Antioxidants
Just like you look for antioxidants in the food you eat, you should also look for antioxidants to put on your skin. Allure notes that they are basically ingredients that protect the skin against environmental stressors like free radicals. It makes sense, then, to make it a point to use products that are rich in antioxidant ingredients to improve your complexion. Case in point, Pretty Me's review of the Asian-favorite Kojic Acid Soap enumerates four powerhouse antioxidant ingredients: Vitamin E, virgin coconut oil, pure coconut oil, and kojic acid. Together, these can give you a brighter, more natural skin tone, deep cleanse and exfoliate your skin, and fade your scars. With continued use of antioxidant-rich products, you can also expect to treat skin ailments like blemishes, freckles, hyperpigmentation, and melasma.
Vitamin C
It's not surprising why Vitamin C is all the rage right now. It has the power to counteract and protect against free
radical damage and can brighten dark spots over time. Plus, as noted in our 'Oranges, our best allies' ; post, vitamin C
can also make you look extra radiant and healthy.

Just be sure that the vitamin C product you're going to use come in airless, opaque packaging, as the ingredient is
sensitive to light and can easily succumb to degradation when exposed to sunlight.

Ingredients to avoid

Parabens
You may have noticed that many skincare products have a paraben-free label. This is because it's a well-known ingredient to avoid due to a research paper that claimed parabens can be found in breast cancer tissue samples.

And while the cosmetic products only use a small concentration, coupled with the fact that EU and FDA regulations mark them as safe to use if they're in the current form, it's still better to be safe than sorry.
Formaldehyde
Formaldehyde has long been classified as a carcinogen, but it's still being used in many beauty products.

The good news is many retailers are beginning to ban products that contain this ingredient. But Byrdie points out that while it's a well-known toxic ingredient , many aren't privy to the fact that there are also other ingredients that release formaldehyde. You should exercise caution when shopping, as it might just be hiding behind another name.
Mineral oil
Mineral oil may be an effective moisturizing agent, but when used on the skin, it can effectively clog your pores. This
is because it's a petroleum by-product that coats the skin like plastic.

It messes with the skin's ability to fight against toxins, which means that it can also increase the likelihood of acne and other conditions. This ingredient is typically found in creams, lotions, and ointments, so be sure to watch out for it when shopping for products.

Have a Day of Self-Care

Preparing Yourself  for The Perfect Home Spa Day

Before you can have a spa day, you need to ensure the necessary preparations have been put in place to start the day off on the right foot. No matter how busy you are, you need to treat yourself on special days to refresh and re-energize your body.

The basic preparation before your pamper day includes:
  1. Cleaning up your home a day before: Take at least 15 mins to tidy up your home and make sure everything is in order when you wake and prepare for your spa day. This makes you feel more calm and relaxed. Also, get rid of any sign of work from the room you will be staying in, empty your dishwasher, water your plants, and do any household chores.
  2. Preparing for phone and email free day: Your spa day is all about you, so you have to clear out your schedule. Ensure that you do not have tasks piled up from work, and you have informed everyone in the house about what you will be doing to avoid unwanted interruptions.
  3. Gathering all the items you need for the perfect spa day: Take time to ensure you have a few things ready so you can start your spa day the moment you wake up.
  4. Not pressuring yourself to do things: Do what you feel like doing. A spa day is generally for you to relax and take care of your body, so don't feel pressured to stick to any schedule when you wake up. Remember, spa day essentials are all about relaxing in the best way possible.
  5. Sleeping In: Sleeping in will make you feel instantly refreshed. Try to avoid hitting the snooze button too many times and make sure you get between 7-9 hours of sleep to wake up feeling well-rested. This way, you start the day off on the right foot; feeling refreshed instead of groggy.

Checklist For Creating a Spa-like Atmosphere at Home

Your home spa environment is a place for you to recharge and revitalize. So you have to ensure you create the right atmosphere that is conducive to self-care, rest, and relaxation.

If you seem to have a little trouble answering the question: “What do you need for a spa day?”, you can find a checklist based on the Feng Shui principles below to help you create a harmonious spa day atmosphere in and around the home :
  • Candles: Preferably  natural beeswax candles as they are non-toxic and non-polluting
  •  Fresh, clean cotton towel and face cloths
  •  Scented sheets and pillows with aromatic mist: Ensure your bread spread has a gentle and simple pattern
  •  Plants or fresh flowers: Real, not artificial
  •  Heater: Ensure it is in a safe place away from water and fabrics
  • Incense
  •  Premium quality essential oil
  •  Fragrance-free body oil
  •  Music: Choose a subtle soundtrack. You can play the same song in every room in perfect sync.
  •  Refreshments

Now that you have what you need for a spa day, it's time to nurture and care for yourself.

17 DIY Steps To Planning a Perfect Spa Day at Home

You can escape from your usual routine with spa day treatments like Massage, spa & sauna, facials, body care, manicures and so on. There are so many different home spa treatments you can give yourself.

Here is a simple DIY routine you can use to give yourself a rejuvenating self-care treat whenever you please:

Body Care
1. Draw a Hot Bath:  Fill your bathtub with water of the right temperature. While filling your tub, dim the lights and light some candles. Help yourself relax by:
  • Pouring yourself a glass of wine, juice or some infused water
  •  Playing Chill music
  •  Lighting some incense
  •  Set out a fluffy towel or bathrobe

2. Add essential oil and other ingredients to your baths: This enhances your bath and gives you the benefits of aromatherapy. Feel free to add anything that can help you relax like; bubble bath, bath oils, and bath bombs, among others.

3. Try a skin mask: Apply a skin mask, let it sit on your skin for a few minutes and rinse it off. It leaves your skin feeling refreshed and smooth.

4. Massage your sore muscles as you soak: Take time to knead your muscles with your fingers to loosen yourself up from the sore muscle you have acquired from work stress.

5. Exfoliate your skin: Use an exfoliant and body scrub that you love and apply. Exfoliating after a soak is a great way to diminish blackheads and peel off dead skin. Exfoliating leaves your skin feeling soft, smooth and healthy.

6. Dry your skin and apply a nourishing lotion: After your restorative bath, pat your skin dry and apply a moisturizing lotion to your arms, legs and torso to seal the moisture in. After that, put on your bathrobe and give your skin time to absorb moisture.

7. Exfoliate your face gently: Use warm water and a washcloth or a facial brush to scrub the dead skin off your face. Ensure to use your washcloth or facial brush in a gentle circular motion as the skin is sensitive and could stretch and wrinkle if handled roughly.

8. Facial steam: This helps relax you and open your pores. You can add a few drops of essential oil or any kind of herbs that appeals to you. Then place a towel over your head for 10 minutes to trap steam and breathe in deeply through your nose.

9. Apply a face mask: A face mask can be relaxing. It can also make your skin feel lovely. The most natural solution is to use a reviving mask with clay from a store. You can, however, create a simple facemask at home with a few ingredients.

10. Moisturize your face: Use a soothing day cream from a store or facial oil on your face to trap in the moisture from your facial treatment.

11. Remove your old polish: Use an acetone-free nail polish remover if possible to remove old nail polish from your toe and fingernails.

12. Soak your fingers in warm water: Soak your fingers in a bowl of warm water for five minutes with your nails immersed. This softens your nails and cuticles to make them easier to shape.

13. Trim and file your nails: Use fingernail clippers or scissors to shape your nails to a crescent shape and round off the edges so your nails look professionally trimmed.

14. Push back your cuticles: Gently push back your cuticles with a cuticle pusher or an orange stick. Be very gentle to protect your fingers from infection.

15. Apply your nail polish: Make sure your nails dry completely between coats to prevent smudging. A good manicure has at least three coats: a base coat, a coat and a topcoat. The best method for painting your nails neatly is to paint one stroke on either side, then fill in the middle.

16. Soak and exfoliate your feet: Soak your feet for some minutes in a tub or a bowl filled with warm water. Use a callus shaver or any other instrument to remove dry skin

17. Trim and polish your toenails: Shape your toenails with clippers. Make sure you round off the edges to prevent ingrown toenails then do a three-coat pedicure.
