What is a facial?

6/8/2022

Comments

A facial is a skin treatment that exfoliates the dead skin cells, cleanses the skin pores,  and rejuvenates and nourishes the face, making skin appear healthier and younger. Facials can be tailored to the individual skin type and skin concerns such as not performing a harsh exfoliation on someone with sensitive skin. It is an amazing and easiest way to do away with a stressful week that seriously affected your skin and you may choose many types of facials which can be suitable for you at Carisma Spa & Wellness.

Each facial starts with a consultation that helps the therapist or aesthetician determine the kind of facial or products the skin type and concern. Once that is approved, the relaxing part begins which generally has basic steps.

facial procedure

Aestheticians usually start the facial by gently massaging cleanser onto the face, neck, and décolleté to remove any remains of makeup and dirt. With a facial sponge, cloth or cotton pad paired with warm water, this helps them evaluate and decide the kind of mask or product they will apply later. Depending on the skin type and Spa you are visiting, the aesthetician may remove the dead skin cells with an exfoliating cream or scrub to open up the pores.

Next step is to clear the individual pores that are clogged with excess sebum, oil or dead skin cells which may form blackheads and acne. This process is usually done with a hand or a special metal tool. After the oil and dead skin has been removed. The next step of the facial is the custom mask or the product application such as serum, moisturiser, purifying and blemish, dark spots and radiance or anti pollution products. Facial is usually concluded with facial massage which can relax you after the treatment and also improve lymphatic drainage.

what is hammam?

15/7/2022

Comments

The hammam or also known as the Turkish Bath and Turkish Bath, is a form of steam bath or a wet version of sauna, which originates from the Middle East. It is mostly influenced by the Roman bath houses called “thermae.” which was a central part of Roman life. The Ottoman Empire popularised the tradition by making the hammams available to people of all classes. Carisma Spa & Wellness is the first spa to introduce the hammam in Malta, you may use the hammam as a facility and also have hammam treatments.

History of hammam

The significance of hammam in the Islamic cultures were both religious and community purposes. It allowed people to have ritual cleansing, general hygiene, and serve a meeting place for the community of both men and women. The remains of bath houses found goes back to the Umayyad period (7th-8th centuries) till the Ottoman period. The architectural structure of the hammams evolved from the layout of both Greek and Roman bath houses and usually included rooms with different needs. These rooms included an undressing room, a cold room, a warm room and a hot room. Heat was regularly generated through furnaces which served for hot water and steam and the hot air and smoke was channelled through conduits under the floor of the rooms.
Picture
Roman Baths in Bath, England
Turkish baths started to emerge during the empire’s growth era which date back to the 14th century. During the Ottoman Empire’s vast reign of much of the Middle East and Eastern Europe, hammams can be found scattered around. The hammams were designed and planned to be the focal point in the city centres which can be accessible to every class of people. This is also the reason why the hammams are generally found beside the mosques, which served as a form of cleansing before entering the mosques to pray. Ottomans integrated the Islamic bath house and Byzantine bath houses due to centuries of war, peace, alliance, trade and competition thus mixing the traditions and culture.

what can be done in hammam

Hammam is generally a large communal bathing space which is an elaborately built marble room with tall ceilings and skylights for natural lighting, where you can relax alone as long as you wish. Before you enter a hammam, there are relaxing areas to lay down, chill, and have a cup of tea or a cold drink before or after the bath.

When you enter the hammam, you will immediately feel the humidity and steam and then you may use the heated marble stones to wash yourself with the fountains that are located all around. Hammam treatment is simple and an effective way of relaxing both mind and body.

In usual traditional hammams, the therapist or also called the “tellak” in Turkish, will scrub your body with a silk glow which will get rid of the dead skin. After the scrub, your body will be covered in foam which will be also used for massaging. To wash your body the therapist will use copper plates to fill in warm or cold water depending on your preference. You will be experiencing increased circulation and opening of the skin pores that will prepare your body for deep cleansing and exfoliation. Heated air and water help your muscles relax also with the foam massage.
Picture
Hammam exfoliation
At Carisma Spa & Wellness, you will be able to do the traditional hammam ritual treatment both with silk and salt exfoliation for sensitive skins. You will be able to also choose to do a face and body mask with hair care in hammam which is a head to toe ritual that takes the benefits of hammam even further. Lastly, we will also be offering specialised hammam treatments that target your face and body goals, combining the traditional Hammam experience with massages and facial treatments. You will be able to have a massage and face mask after your hammam ritual.
Picture
Foam massage

conclusion

The hammam is an impressive room, tiled with antibacterial marble, exquisitely handcrafted and featuring a large dome, several basins, and a heated marble platform at the centre. The antibacterial and earthy marble removes static electricity from the air and helps to relax the mind and body. The hot room is continuously supplied with warm dry air, helping to open your pores and put you at ease. The soft light welcomes you to a harmonious environment for you to rejuvenate and find your inner balance while returning your skin texture to feel like silk.

After the hot water of the steamy room opens your pores, the Turkish hammam ritual uses a salt or silk scrub to exfoliate away your skin impurities and reveal the bright fresh skin underneath. This is followed by a body massage with white foam bubbles and soap. This spa experience leaves you with relaxed muscles, improved blood circulation and relief from aches and pains.

What are  anti-ageing serums?

1/7/2022

Comments

Skin serums are packed with vital active ingredients, and are very light with highly concentrated liquids. They consist of rapid absorbing, tiny molecules go onto skin easily where creams and lotion cannot. These minute molecules pierce deeper into the skin to bring collagen enhancers, substantial amounts of antioxidants that you would not find in non-prescription products.
Picture
PIONNIERE XMF RADIANCE RETEXTURING SERUM
It has been proven that nutritional supplements can actually delay skin ageing. There are two groups that are related to anti-aging elements which are active in a lot of anti-aging skin serums:

1. Antioxidants like polyphenols, flavonoids and vitamins lessen the collagen decaying by reducing the levels of oxidants in your skin tissues. Vitamins C, B3, and E are most important because of their small molecular weight, which gives them the ability to deeply penetrate the skin. Vitamin C encourages the production of collagen. Vitamin B3 regulates cell regeneration. And vitamin E has anti-inflammatory effects.

Vitamins such as C, B3, and E are the most essential due to their small molecular weight which is why they are able to puncture your skin easily. Production of collagen is mainly motivated by Vitamin C intake, vitamin E has anti-inflammatory results and vitamin B3 controls cell regeneration. Vitamin C and E give more useful antioxidant defence than vitamin C or E alone. Studies have shown that vitamin C and E together with ferulic acid spread both antioxidant and sunscreen effects.
Picture

2. Cell regulators, such as retinols, peptides, and growth factors, have direct effects on collagen metabolism and influence collagen production. Collagen production is increased with cell regulators like retinols, peptides, and growth factors which is good for the overall collagen metabolism.

Vitamin A also provides antioxidant effects. It is similarly known as also “retinol” and it is one of the most common anti-ageing compound. Due to having positive effective collagen metabolism and skin. It helps get rid of oxidants to increase cell amount, improve skin texture, lines and brown spots.
Picture
 YOUTH PERFORMANCE WRINKLE RADIANCE SERUM
Serums are not the same as moisturisers, they share similar ingredients and purpose, serums are more easily absorbed by the skin because of going deep into the epidermis. Moisturisers only apply to the top of the skin layer to hold the moisture, while serums are water-based whereas the facial oils or moisturisers are cream-based. For old and dry skin, you should use serums instead of lotion or cream. You may also use moisturisers but apply the serum beforehand for better results.

Serums are a great way to treat dehydrated skin, treat wrinkles, fine lines, and spots.  You can use skincare serums at night, and during the day. In the daytime, if you've got dry skin, wash your face and pat it dry, then layer your skin. With active ingredients to treat the epidermis, remove oxidants, and increase collagen metabolism, serums are a great anti-ageing beauty product choice. We would recommend you to check out our best sellers and anti-ageing products where you can find Phytomer’s best anti-ageing, radiance, and soothing line serums on our website at Carisma Spa & Wellness.

Here are the best serum products you may find on Carisma Spa:

YOUTH PERFORMANCE WRINKLE RADIANCE SERUM 30ML - Great for wrinkles, soothing skin lines.

HYDRASEA ULTRA-MOISTURIZING POLARIZED WATER SERUM 30ML - Moisturising booster for deeper, faster, intense hydration for very thirsty skin.

WHITE LUMINATION BRIGHTENING SERUM 30ML  - Serum for dark spots, a radiant complexion, softens spots and evens the skin.

benefits of manicure and pedicure

15/5/2022

Comments

One of the best ways to keep nails looking healthy and beautiful is manicure and pedicure which helps the development of the nails. Both women and men should have manicures and pedicures by professional nail technicians from time to time. We need proper care of our hands since we use them all day long while working in an office or home. Same goes for our feet, we put more pressure on them than our hands, so it is really necessary to give them some pampering and de-stressing.
Picture
Manicure Treatment
It is really important to maintain the hygiene for those who are working in an office because we need to keep our nails clean and fresh. We meet people and many times, we shake hands and use hand gestures while we express ourselves therefore, it is crucial that your nails look clean and healthy for first impressions. Pedicure is a must for the relaxation of our feet. Due to standing, walking, etc. it is the only organ that gets the most stress throughout the day. A pedicure helps keep feet moisturised, get rid of bacteria and fungal infections, keep the nails healthy and clean as well as remove any callouses on the bottom of your heel. The nail technician also gives stress-free foot massage at the end of the pedicures which improves blood circulation.
Manicures and Pedicures also have several benefits rather than just making your nails look beautiful and clean. Having manicure and pedicure regularly will provide your overall health and as well as well-being benefits. In winter especially, your skin tends to be dry and require more nourishment. Your age is quite visible on the skin of your hands and feet, so maintaining nail, hand and feet health will help keep them young.

benefits

Apart from exfoliation, moisturising and cuticle removal while having manicure or pedicure treatment, you will also be receiving a relaxing, stress-free massage for your hands and feet. This massage will improve blood circulation, relax the muscles and enhance the mobility of the joints and bones. These benefits will help you get rid of any pain and aid your body to circulate in the cold winters.

By having regular manicure and pedicure treatment, chances of your nails developing any infection or fungi are decreased. Due to our hands being exposed to a lot of dirt, elements and products on a daily basis, it is crucial to have proper cleansing so the dead skin cells on your hands and feet are removed. This also encourages your body to develop new cells, keeping your nails more healthy looking and clean.
Picture

Conclusion

Manicure and pedicure treatments are recommended for you to regularly have once in a while for your hands and feet nails to get cleaned and look young and fresh. You will also have positive benefits such as removal of dead skin cells, less chance of developing fungi or any other infection and clean looking nails. We use our hands and feet a lot so you should give them the relaxation and treatment they deserve. You may enjoy classic manicure or pedicure or deluxe treatment which involves hands exfoliation, nail shaping, cuticle care, buffing, and a warm cream hand massage for manicure and a warm foot soak and a foot scrubbing with either a pumice stone or foot file followed by clipping and shaping of the nails, pushing back of the cuticles, a short foot and calf massage, moisturiser for pedicure at Carisma Spa & Wellness.

What are the benefits and risks of sauna?

18/4/2022

Comments

Saunas are small rooms that are heated to temperatures between 65°C to 90°C. They often have unpainted, wood interiors and temperature controls. Saunas may also include rocks (as part of their heating element) that absorb and give off heat and water can be poured onto these rocks to create steam. There are various types of saunas that have different heating techniques. You may enjoy traditional sauna as well as steam bath in Carisma Spa & Wellness venues. If you like to use the facilities with free use for a day, we recommend you to check out our Spa Day Packages.

What is sauna?

Saunas can be described as a therapeutic, heated, enclosed, wood-lined room with various different options for seating, design, and size or capacity. The intense heat generated within the sauna encourages detoxifying perspiration, relief from aches and pains, and deep relaxation. And these are just a fraction of the benefits saunas deliver. Sweating has been used as a therapy for a long time, the Mayans used sweat houses 3,000 years ago, according to Harvard Health Publications. In Finland, saunas have also been popular and used for thousands of years. The main benefits suggested for saunas are for relaxation and cardiovascular health, however, a sauna may not be suitable for everyone.
Picture
Finnish sauna

Types of sauna

There are four diverse types of saunas based on how the room is heated.

  • Traditional or regular sauna (also called Finnish sauna)
  • Dry sauna
  • Steam bath
  • Infrared therapy sauna

Each experience changes  from one type of sauna to the next. Traditional saunas and infrared therapy saunas are the most common for home use. Home saunas or domestic saunas can be custom-designed or pre-built. They can be installed indoors or outdoors.

Traditional or regular sauna or Finnish sauna is a wooden room or building with wooden benches placed on different levels inside. A good quality sauna should have proper insulation for the heat inside which then excess water does not stay on the floor. Even with good heat insulation, one of the major elements is to have good ventilation so people can breathe fresh air easily as well. The typical Finnish heated to between 70° to 100°C and has low humidity levels.

Infrared saunas use lamps which generate electromagnetic radiation to heat your body instead of the entire room. Infrared saunas produce lower temperatures than other types of saunas, typically staying around 60°C.

Dry saunas are a room that's made from softwood and uses a heater to bring the temperature up, heating the air around and your body in the process. Generally, temperatures start around 90 °C in these types of saunas and they have low humidity like the regular saunas, hence the name dry.

Steam rooms are similar to saunas because in both places you can sit in a small, heated room, and both have health benefits. The big difference is in the type of heat that they provide, sauna uses dry heat, usually from hot rocks or a closed stove. Steam rooms are heated by a generator filled with boiling water and the key to the steam room’s unique health benefits is the humidity. The temperature inside usually changes from 43° to 50°C.
Picture
Infrared sauna

health benefits and effects

The effects and health benefits on the body are similar regardless of how the heat or humidity levels are regulated. When you use a sauna, your heart rate increases and blood vessels widen which then circulation increases in a similar way to moderate exercise depending on the duration of sauna use. Increased blood circulation helps ease muscle soreness, improve joint movements and reduce arthritis pain. Due to the improvement in the circulation, you can relax and reduce stress which directly affects your well-being. The reduction in stress levels may be linked to a lower risk of cardiovascular events, which is linked to lower blood pressure and enhanced heart function. People with asthma may also find relief from some symptoms as a result of using a sauna by opening airways, loosen phlegm.

Health risks

Although a person with cardiovascular disease should speak to a doctor first, moderate use of a sauna appears to be safe for most people. You should be careful with the blood pressure, switching between the heat of a sauna and cold water in a swimming pool is not advisable as it can raise blood pressure. Sauna use may also cause blood pressure to fall, so people with low blood pressure should talk to their doctor to make sure sauna use is safe. People who have recently had a heart attack should also talk to their doctor first. People with certain conditions, such as kidney disease, may be at a higher risk of dehydration. Dehydration can result from fluid loss while sweating in the sauna. The increased temperatures can also lead to dizziness and nausea in some people.

Precautions

A long study of people in Finland who experienced sudden death showed that in 1.8 percent of cases, the person had had a sauna within the last 3 hours, and in 1.7 percent of cases, they had done so in the last 24 hours. Many of these had consumed alcohol.

  • Limit time spent in a sauna: It is not recommended to spend more than 20 minutes at a time in a sauna. First-time users should spend a maximum of 5 to 10 minutes as they get used to the heat, they can slowly increase the time to about 20 minutes.
  • Drink plenty of water: It is important to return the fluids lost from sweating whatever type of sauna you use. You should drink about two to four glasses of water after using a sauna.
  • Avoid sauna use if ill: People who are ill should also wait until they recover before using a sauna. Women who are pregnant or those with certain medical conditions, such as low blood pressure, should ask their doctor before sauna use.
  • Supervise children: Children aged 6 and above are safe to use a sauna, but should be supervised when doing so. They should spend no longer than 15 minutes inside.

Spa Day at Carisma Spa

conclusion

Sauna heat can encourage pain and aches relief as well as deep relaxation. The activation of blood circulation can help with muscle soreness, joint movements and breathing. You may enjoy different types of saunas that have similar health benefits but most widely known saunas are typically traditional Finnish saunas. Saunas have been around for thousands of years which shows us the benefits of it, however you have to be cautious if you have conditions such as heart problems and kidney diseases. You have to take precautions with how long you stay in sauna as it can make you dehydrated. You may enjoy traditional sauna as well as steam bath in Carisma Spa & Wellness venues. What is Japanese massage?

17/3/2022

Comments

Japanese massage is thought of as any massage originating in Japan. There are two fundamental massages of Japanese origin, “shiatsu” and “kobido.” Then there are different versions due to the mixture of numerous oriental techniques. Japanese massage is based on old traditional Chinese medicine such as the “qi meridians.”  Shiatsu technique also derives from an older Japanese massage technique called “Anma.”

What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a form of therapeutic bodywork from Japan. It makes use of kneading, pressing, soothing, tapping, and stretching techniques and is usually done without oil and performed with clothing.  Shiatsu translates to "finger pressure" in Japanese language. There are many varieties of Shiatsu, all of which have roots in one in all 3 structures that evolved in Japan in the early 1900s. It also derived from the cause of a resurgence of Japan's medical therapies, together with acupuncture and Anma massage. Shiatsu evolved from the mixing of common Japanese therapies with present day western medical understanding, as well as traditional Chinese medical remedies.

Brief History

Shiatsu was invented and developed by Akashi Kan Ichi in 1320. It evolved from the old traditional technique anma. Acupuncturist Sugiyama Waichi developed and popularised the anma technique around seventeen century. Since Sugiyama's time, massage in Japan was strongly related to the blind. Sugiyama, who's blind himself, started some medical colleges for the blind which taught this practice.

Tokujiro Namikoshi founded his shiatsu university in the 1940s and his legacy became the national reputation of shiatsu as an independent remedy in Japan. He is generally believed to have invented modern-day shiatsu. Although, shiatsu became already in use in 1919, when a book referred to as “Shiatsu Ho” ("finger pressure method") became available by Tamai Tempaku.

Principle and Benefits of Shiatsu

The Japanese Ministry of Health defines shiatsu as "a form of manipulation by thumbs, arms and hands without using instruments, mechanical or to use pressure to the human skin to accurately heal inner damages, achieve and preserve health, and deal with unique diseases. The strategies utilised in shiatsu consist of stretching, holding, and more commonly, leaning body weight into different points on your body alongside key channels." The exercise of shiatsu is primarily based on the traditional Chinese idea of “qi'', which is often defined as an "energy flow". Qi is supposedly channelled with pathways inside the human body, referred to as “meridians”, imposing a number of effects. Despite claims and practitioners that use the techniques and ways of shiatsu, Meridians are not real anatomical structures. Scientists have found no evidence that supports their existence, key proponents of their existence have not come to any conclusion as to how they might work or be tested in a scientific context.

Using a combination of kneading, tapping, pulling and pressure, practitioners target the legs, back, arms and neck. Japanese Massage aims to bring about relaxation and healing, not just with the physical body, but also on an emotional and spiritual level. It energises the whole system, activates blood circulation and helps the body to eliminate toxins. It has been confirmed that this massage technique restores vitality, helps the immune system and stimulates the body's defence system. We recommend you to try out Japanese Massage in Carisma Spa venues to feel the healing effects of shiatsu!

Protecting Sensitive Skin

  • Protect your skin from the sun

The simplest way to guard your pores and skin from sun’s damage is to apply a day by day moisturiser that has an SPF of 15 or higher. You may even use higher SPF, like 30 or 45, on your face. If your moisturiser does not have SPF, then make certain to use sunscreen for your face, arms, and different exposed pores and skin in the morning before leaving the house. Remember, you must put sunscreen on even on cloudy days. If your sunscreen causes pores and skin irritation, get sunscreen which is hypoallergenic and has no fragrances and dyes. The sun is most powerful between 10am and 2pm, so keep away from being outside the daylight during this time, if possible.

  • Protect your skin from the cold weather

Very cold air can dry out pores and skin, as can being in particularly warm climates. When going out of doors in the winter, protect your skin as you may with hats, gloves, and scarves. If you will be out in hot, dry temperatures all day, put on sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses, and try to wear loose and light coloured clothes.

Consult your doctor if you experience severe or persistent skin problems. Sometimes your best efforts and careful attention are not enough to figure out what is causing skin irritation or how to avoid it. If the rash doesn't go away, the skin irritation bothers you, interferes with your daily activities, or gets worse over time, see your doctor. They can perform a patch test to determine if you are allergic to anything, if any. There are also prescription medications available if your skin problems are severe.

Soaking in hot water dries out the skin as it takes away its protective oils. Take a warm shower rather than a hot shower and shower that is too hot. Limit time in water. In general, try to maintain 5-10 minutes.

  • Do not scrub hard

Do not rub your skin vigorously. Avoid exfoliating with harsh scrubs which can cause flaking and irritation.. Stay away from rough towels and  use a soft sponge or cotton pad instead.
