Under Eye Bags and What Is Causing Them

People often think that bags under eyes are a cosmetic concern, however, they usually do not require a medical procedure or treatment to get rid of them. Everyday home and lifestyle tips and treatments may help reduce the swelling under the eyes. There are surely medical and surgical treatments that exist for this issue, although you would  have to check with your doctor if you have an allergy which may also explain why the swelling might be the reason.

therapies

There are different wrinkle treatments which can improve the swelling and puffiness under the eyes. These treatments include chemical peels and fillers which can improve the tone, tighten and rejuvenate the skin around the area where swelling occurs. Laser resurfacing is another way of getting rid of the bags, wrinkles and uneven skin tone under the eyes. It uses two types of lasers called Ablative laser and Non-blative laser. Ablative laser removes the thin outer layer of skin (epidermis) and heats the underlying skin (dermis), which stimulates the growth of collagen, a protein that improves skin firmness and texture. As the epidermis heals and regrows, the treated area appears smoother and tighter. Non-Ablative procedure also restores collagen growth but the results are less noticeable but has a shorter recovery time. It is usually done with pulsed-dye laser, erbium and intense pulsed light therapy.

eyelid surgery

Eyelid surgery also known as Blepharoplasty, is another option of treatment for the under eye bags. By consulting to the surgeon, he or she will choose the best procedure for your anatomy and needs. The procedure is usually done by removing the excess fat through an incision on the upper eyelid or inside the lower lid. The surgery will be done under local anaesthesia and this surgery may also be an option if you have baggy or droopy upper eyelids, excess skin of the upper eyelids that interferes with your vision or the baggy under eyes.

causes of under eye bags

  • Sleep issues

Getting not enough sleep can cause blood vessels to leak and combine with the fluids which leads to dark circles, because when you are asleep these fluids settle in the tissue beneath the eyes. You should get the proper amount of sleep your age and body needs then you will be able to see the changes under your eyes.

  • Allergies/sinus problems

Allergies can be the leading cause why your eyes might look puffy because allergies cause swelling in sinus tissue. Also, getting proper medical treatment for your allergies will help reduce swelling in your sinuses and beneath your eyes.

  • Tobacco use

Fluids can settle under your eyes too because of nicotine use which also disturbs your natural sleep pattern. Smoking may also cause substances that interrupt the collagen and elasticity of the skin that keep the area beneath the eyes firm.

  • Alcohol use

Although alcohol is a liquid, it dehydrates the body. When you are dehydrated, the skin under your eyes becomes flabby and weak, causing bags to form. By reducing the alcohol intake, you will also reduce the bags under your eyes.

  • Ageing

The muscles and tissues weaken as you age and the fat that naturally supports the eyes can sink beneath the area of eyes, which is why the eyes will appear baggy. Eventually, the fluids can also appear more in the area.

  • Eating salty foods

When you eat salty food, your body develops more fluids and beneath the eye area is where these fluids appear. Try to eat less salty food to prevent under eye bags and this is also good for your heart as well.

  • Not removing makeup

If you don’t remove makeup before going to sleep, it can irritate the tissue beneath your eyes, causing it to swell. It is good to wash your face before going to sleep if you use makeup, makeup can irritate the tissue beneath the eyes which can cause swelling. Wash your face with soap or cleansers carefully, you may also apply eye creams for night use.

  • Too much sun

Staying in the sun too much or tanning a lot may also damage the skin cells and the collagen that keeps the skin firm. Use the right amount of sunscreen as often as suggested, and limit the amount of time you spend in direct sunlight. You can also wear sunglasses and a hat to help protect the skin beneath your eyes.

  • Heredity

If your family has under eye bags, it means it runs in the family and chances are that you will too, but that is normal as some people are prone to having them. Try to apply eye or wrinkle creams, this might help you tighten the skin.
