Black Friday is an informal phrase for the Friday After Thanksgiving in the United States. It is usually the start of the Christmas shopping season. The first Black Friday occurred in 1869 after financier Jay Gould and railway businessman James Fisk attempted to corner the gold market, which ultimately resulted in financial panic and the collapse of the market. A little over 60 years later, on October 29, 1929, another stock market crash referred to as Black Tuesday marked the onset of the Great Depression.
The Black Friday which we know of today lies in the sense of “black” meaning “marked by disaster or misfortune.” This term began in the 1950s, when the factory managers first began using the phrase after their workers started to call in sick, ultimately extending the holiday weekend. 10 years later, the phrase was used again by Philadelphia traffic police to describe the day due to their 12-hour shifts. People flooded the city to start their holiday shopping and sometimes this clashed with Army-Navy football games. The term became popular among shoppers and merchants in Philadelphia, eventually, it spread nationwide.
